History of Saint Petersburg

General John C. Williams and Peter Demens co-founded the city in 1888. On February 29, 1892, the city was incorporated as a town with the population of mere 300 people. As a city, it was incorporated in June 1903. The flight of St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line became the first scheduled commercial flight that took off from the city, and Tony Jannus became the first aviator of that flight. St. Petersburg Times became the first major newspaper to published in Tampa Bay in 1884. F. A. Davis, who was the noted Philadelphia publisher, initiated the first electrical service in the city in 1897 and city's first trolley service in 1904. Saint Petersburg's first major industry was established in 1899 by Henry W. Hibbs. On December 1, 1915, the city witnessed the opening of first library with the name of Mirror Lake Library. The city enjoyed a boom in the invasion of tourists with the inception of 1920s. All credit goes to Gandy Bridge which in turn contributed towards making Saint Petersburg the largest city in Pinellas County. During early 1930s, Great Depression brought a fall in tourism. But, Public Works Administration helped the city recover and build the St. Petersburg City Hall. The city received its first stadium named the Bayfront Center which hosted the first professional hockey league in Tampa Bay.

Salvador Dali Museum

State Theater

Built in 1924, the State Theater has successfully earned a worldwide reputation due to its jaw-dropping Beaux-arts style architecture. All credit goes to the noted architect Neel Reid who optimized his expertise to the core and gave birth to this spectacular theater. The building was remodeled by famous architect Archie Parrish. You will fail to refrain yourself from entering through its whopping facade which is a composition of three bays. The most jaw-dropping feature of these bays is the series of quoins placed above a water table base, which is topped by a capital with a swag. Jannus Live

Popular as Florida's oldest concert venue in Florida, Jannus Live got its name from the noteworthy aviator, Tony Jannus. He piloted the Benoist Model 14 (the first commercial flight which was heavier than air) that departed from Saint Petersburg to Tampa on January 1st, 1914. Today, Jannus Live has become the major multilevel entertainment complex cum concert venue in Downtown Saint Petersburg. It is popular as an "Outdoor Standing Room Only" concert venue.
